Good morning parents/guardians,
I hope everyone is doing well!
Announcements:
The students’ math quiz and English spelling quiz have been graded and should be coming home in their green folder. Please ensure to sign the quizzes and return them to class by Monday, as the folder must remain in class at all times. Please do not remove past quizzes from the folder, as these grades will be needed to discuss your child’s progress during parent-teacher interviews.
In the folder, you will also find the students’ classroom work, such as their self-learner profile in English, their positive affirmation work in French (e.g., je suis gentille, brave, etc.), their First Nations coloring activity (Chaque enfant compte), and their Terry Fox t-shirt coloring activity. There is no need to sign these; simply review them and place them back in the folder.
Learning Updates:
In French, we are continuing to focus on oral and listening activities. Students are following classroom instructions in French (e.g., sortez votre cahier, votre dossier, sortez un crayon, videz la table, rangez la bouteille d’eau, etc.), which is improving their listening skills.
For their oral strand, students have been singing songs such as Apprends l’alphabet, C’est l’Halloween, and Le lion est mort ce soir. They are really enjoying this, and it is helping them learn French through music. Some students know these songs by heart—I’m sure you’ve heard them singing at home! It’s amazing to see their growth.
This week, students also learned how to introduce themselves in French. Next Thursday, they will present their introductions in front of the class. They have been practicing their sentences during community circles and with classmates. The sentences should be in their French cahier (notebook), which I will remind them to bring home on Friday. In case they forget, and you’d like to review the introduction with them, here’s a sample:
Bonjour, je m’appelle [name], j’ai 8 ans, ma couleur préférée est le rose, j’aime nager et regarder la télévision, je parle anglais, français et espagnol.
Students are also beginning to write in French, working on spelling words and constructing sentences. We will focus more on writing in the upcoming weeks.
In English, students completed their self-learning profiles, which highlight their goals and plans to achieve them. We will soon start working on different text forms (poems, letters, biographies, etc.), discussing their purpose, target audiences, and how to write these texts.
In Math, we are continuing with number sense and numeration. We’ve briefly discussed terms like greater than, equal to, and less than, using the symbols >, <, and =. We will dive deeper into this next week. The students are also learning to count money. This week, they played group games where they rolled dice, added the digits together, and counted the corresponding amount of money using fake bills and coins. For example, a group of four rolled the numbers 6, 5, 7, and 3, which totaled $21. The challenge was to show $21 with bills and coins. I noticed that counting with 25 cents, 10 cents, and 5 cents can be tricky. Parents, please challenge your child at home by asking them to count money. It can be a fun game to play together!
In Science, students started learning about plants, focusing on the parts of a plant/flower (roots, stem, leaves, etc.) and how plants need water, warmth, air, light, and space to survive. The students made a beautiful crafty flower and labeled its parts, which I will send home soon. Right now, their work is displayed on one of the school’s bulletin boards.
Thank you for your continued support!
Best regards,
Mme Sitar
