Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is doing well. It was a pleasure meeting some of you at the Open House on Wednesday.

Announcements:

  • English Spelling Quiz: Thursday, October 10th. The information is under the “Resources” tab.
  • Math Quiz: Tuesday, October 15th. Details are also under “Resources.”
  • The English and French quizzes from two weeks ago have been graded. Students will receive a green folder titled “Mes Notes,” and their graded quizzes should be inside. Please note that students who joined my class mid-September have not completed these quizzes. Feel free to review them over the weekend and email me if you have any questions or concerns. Parents, please sign both quizzes and return the green folder to school by Monday, as it will be needed for the upcoming parent-teacher interviews.

Learning Updates from the Last Two Weeks:

French:
Students have been focusing on oral and listening skills. During our community circles, they practice forming more complex sentences (e.g., “Today, I am going to…” or “I am excited because…”). Some students are still using simple sentences (e.g., “Je suis gentil, belle, brave,” etc.), and that is perfectly fine at this stage.

We’ve also been working on listening skills, with students following daily directions in French such as “assis,” “debout,” “regardez en haut, en bas, à gauche, à droite,” “souriez,” “pleurez,” “rigolez,” “dansez,” “marchez doucement,” “faites un câlin,” and more. Ask your child about it—I’m sure they’ll be excited to tell you!

We continue to sing the national anthem in French, as well as “Bonjour mes amis, comment ça va?” Soon, we will begin learning a fun Halloween song (stay tuned—it’s very catchy!).

Additionally, students read a biography of Terry Fox and discussed his hard work and determination. We’ve also been watching short French stories, such as Non, Non et Non, Pas Question and Le secret de la forêt. We pause frequently to understand the key points and emotions of the characters. This week, students completed an individual comprehension activity based on the videos we watched, which will be graded and sent home soon. I will email you once it’s been graded.

English:
Students are working on a Self-Learner Profile, where they reflect on their goals as learners, something they are proud of, skills they have, and something they would like to improve. We’ve also been discussing Orange Shirt Day and the story of Phyllis, learning more about residential schools through the book When I Was Eight. This has provided an opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of First Nations children.

Math:
Students are nearly finished with Module 1. They should now know how to write numbers in standard form (e.g., 1,234) and represent them in different ways (written form, ten blocks, expanded form, charts, etc.). They should also be able to explain the value of each digit (e.g., in 1,245, the 4 is in the tens place, and the 1 is in the thousands place).

All completed math work should be in students’ math duotangs and notebooks. We’ve been doing daily reviews, and students have received a mock test to assess their learning in math so far. I have also posted the key concepts under “Resources” to help everyone prepare for the upcoming quiz.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Thank you for your continued support!

Bon weekend,

Mme Sitar.
