Math Test Details:

  • Math Test: The math test will take place on Friday, April 4th. Students need to review the following concepts:
    • Non-repeating patterns
    • Repeating patterns
    • Number patterns
    • In/Out patterns
    • Word problems with patterns, which may include addition, subtraction, or multiplication.

Examples for Each Concept:

  1. Non-repeating pattern:
    • A, B, C, D, E, F… (each letter appears only once)
    • Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple… (different colors with no repetition)
    • This is a pattern that does not repeat itself and involves different items or numbers.
  2. Repeating pattern:
    • Example: 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2…
    • A repeating pattern is one where the sequence of numbers or items repeats itself.
  3. Number pattern:
    • Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…
    • A number pattern involves a specific sequence of numbers that follows a rule, such as increasing by a fixed number.
  4. In/Out pattern:
    • Example:
      • In: 2, 4, 6, 8
      • Out: 4, 8, 12, 16
      • Rule: Multiply each number in the “in” column by 2 to get the corresponding number in the “out” column.
      • 2 × 2 = 4
      • 4 × 2 = 8
      • 6 × 2 = 12
      • 8 × 2 = 16
    • Addition Rule Example:
      • In: 1, 3, 5, 7
      • Out: 3, 5, 7, 9
      • Rule: Add 2 to each number in the “in” column to get the corresponding number in the “out” column.
      • 1 + 2 = 3
      • 3 + 2 = 5
      • 5 + 2 = 7
      • 7 + 2 = 9
  5. Word Problems with Patterns:
    • Example: “The numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 are part of a pattern. What is the next number?”
    • You may be asked to apply addition, subtraction, or multiplication to solve word problems that follow specific patterns.

Important Note:

Each student will be receiving a math practice package. This package does not include all of the review material, but it does contain quite a bit of practice that was printed by a supply teacher when I was away the week before March break. Do not return it to me. This is NOT homework; it is extra practice for you and your child to review.

For more review, check the math duo tang. Ask your child to bring it home.

Sample questions:

Word Problem: The numbers 4, 8, 12, 16 follow a pattern.

  • What is the 5th number in the pattern?
  • What is the 6th number in the pattern?

Word Problem: Jason is organizing books on a shelf. He places one book every 3 inches. How many inches will it take for 5 books to be placed on the shelf?

Look at the following pattern: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, ______

  • If the pattern continues, what will the 10th number in the sequence be?
  • If you add 2 to each number in this pattern, what would the first five numbers of the new pattern look like?
